Zohar Passage to Scan…
Vayetze Vol. 5  Page 99  Verse 153

153. Come and behold: the world perseveres for Ya'akov's sake. It may be said that it does so for
Avraham's sake, as it is written: "THESE ARE THE GENERATIONS OF THE HEAVEN AND OF THE
EARTH when they were created (Heb. behibar'am)" (Beresheet 2:4); the Hebrew word contains the
letters of the name of Avraham. THIS MEANS THAT THE GENERATIONS OF THE HEAVEN AND OF
THE EARTH EXISTED DUE TO AVRAHAM. HE ANSWERS: Yet Avraham existed for the sake of
Ya'akov, as it is written: "Therefore thus says Hashem, concerning the house of Ya'akov, who
redeemed Avraham" (Yeshayah 29:22). Before that, the Holy One, blessed be He, used to build and
destroy worlds. After Ya'akov came, the worlds were constructed from him and were not destroyed as
before. This is the meaning of the verse: "thus says Hashem that created you, Ya'akov, and He that
formed you, Yisrael..." (Yeshayah 43:1)

The Relevance of this Passage
The twelve tribes (referred to as “house of Ya’akov”) correspond to the celestial influences emanating
from the twelve constellations/signs of the Zodiac. The power of Ya'akov and the patriarchs is in their
ability to rise above any negative influences streaming down from the heavens. Using the mystic
secrets of the Torah, they took control over the signs and captained their own destiny. This governing
power over the stars is bequeathed to the reader of this passage thus giving us the ability to tap into
miracles.

72 Name to Meditate on…

3. Miracle Making

I free myself from all selfishness, envy, anger, and self-pity.

By rejecting these negative temptations, I am free to invoke this Name—thereby igniting the power of
miracles in my life.
How to Tap into the Energy of the Menorah

2006.

On the first night of Chanukah, one light is lit and on each successive night another light is
added until the eighth night when all the lights are lit. When one lights on the first night, one
lights the one on the extreme right. The following night he adds the one immediately to the
left and kindles it first. He then turns to the right and kindles the light of the previous night.
He follows the same procedure each night always adding from right to left but always
lighting from left to right. The reason for this procedure is that the additional light recalls the
greatness and growth of the miracle.

On the first night of Chanukah, after one makes these three blessings, he kindles the light.
On the remaining nights, one only recites the first two blessings and does not say
"shecheyanu." If one was prevented from lighting the candles on the first night or forgot to
say shecheyanu, he may say it the next time he kindles the lights.

There is also a custom of using an extra candle, the shamash to light the other candles.
The shamash may only be used for lighting the other candles and one may derive benefit
from its light. The Chanukah lights themselves, however, may not be used for any other
purpose while they are burning for the purpose of the meditation.

The menorah is placed somewhere where it can be publicly viewed (usually a window sill)
and foods containing oil, such as jelly donuts are eaten.

Blessed are You, Hashem our G-d, King of the universe, Who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this season.

Once candles are lit, arms are motioned three times, hands drawn over the flames as if to
bring the light toward you.  The Menorah should remain lit for at least 30 minutes after
nightfall, during which time no use should be made of its light.  Instead we should spend that
time sitting near the candles, scanning the Zohar and meditating on our connection to the
Light of the Creator and how we can reveal that Light in the world.

SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT ON SHABBAT (FRIDAY AFTERNOON):

On Friday afternoon, the Menorah should be lit 18 minutes before sundown.  Once the
Chanukah candles are lit and the blessings are said, two additional candles are lit, you cover
your eyes as to not see the candles and you recite the following blessing before meditation
on the flames.
